Capturing High Dynamic Range with the PXW-FS7 for greater creative flexibility

The dynamic range of the PXW-FS7 XDCAM camcorder covers an unprecedented 14 stops thanks to a high-sensitivity Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor.

The above footage shows the PXW-FS7 acquiring footage without losing any detail in the highlights or lowlights. It then shows the same footage after grading. A similar look to the graded version might be achieved by use of filters, but this look would be permanent whereas with S-log3 you have the freedom to regrade at any time and achieve a completely different look in postproduction. [Please note special processing has been applied to above video for you to enjoy a representation of wide dynamic range imagery on your screen.]

On bright sunny days, the PXW-FS7’s 14-stop wide dynamic range means you can capture extreme high and low lights in the same scene without blocked-up shadows or clipped whites. This exceptional picture quality can be streamed to an external recorder in RAW format using the XDCA-FS7 or recorded in HD or 4K 4:2:2 10 bit at up to 600Mbps internally using Sony’s advanced XAVC codec.

The PXW-FS7 makes it easier to record and work with high dynamic range content using S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma modes, processing the output from the sensor (in XAVC mode) so that the entire dynamic range is captured in the 10-bit recording. When shooting in RAW, S-Log2/3 is still beneficial as it can be used for the viewfinder display and also provide reference metadata – so when you begin editing RAW footage, your starting point will be the same as what you saw through the viewfinder.

The chart shows S-Log3 characteristics with the horizontal axis (camera stops) representing the light on the object and the vertical axis (code value) indicating the 10-bit recording level. The horizontal axis (camera stop) sets 0 as middle gray with 18% reflectance and each stop doubling the brightness of the aperture.

Covering 6 stops from 18% middle gray to maximum brightness, the FS7 provides up to a 1300% dynamic range. It is a comparable to Sony’s high end digital cinematography cameras.

The above scene shows the PXW-FS7 capturing a street scene containing considerable dynamic range. On a conventional monitor, the image may appear with low contrast prior to grading.
