Netherlands-based Cam-a-lot have upgraded their SRW-9000 camcorders to a Super 35mm PL mount configuration. This makes the professional AV equipment hire company one of the first in Europe to offer its clients the SRW-9000PL with the option of using 35mm film lenses on the camcorder.
Cam-a-lot chose to upgrade its facilities at the start of 2010 with the purchase of two SRW-9000 camcorders with a 2/3-inch lens mount: the standard for video lenses. This purchase was made with the background knowledge that the PL mount conversion would be available within this year.
Philippe Vié, director-owner of Cam-a-lot said: “We do a lot of high-end digital cinematography projects; the majority of our clients produce commercials, feature films and drama series. A small depth of field is essential for this kind of work. Most digital cameras with this type of sensor record to hard drives or flash memory. The SRW-9000PL is a tape-based camera which records onto HDCAM SR media. In many cases this can be an advantage because copies don't need to be made on the set straight away, which then have to be checked again later. This results in an improvement in security of recording and a considerable saving of time and manpower.”
The 6.2 million pixels (1920 x 1080 x RGB) single chip also means that a shallow depth of field is possible. This is an essential requirement that film-makers have because of the dramatic atmosphere it can create in images. Other advantages of the single CCD sensor in the SRW-9000PL are the high level of light-sensitivity, a high resolution and excellent dynamic range.
“I expect the demand for the SRW-9000 to increase now that our two camcorders have been upgraded. The fact that Sony is such a reliable brand also helps. And after all the beta-like cameras that we have seen appear on the market in recent years, it's nice to be able to hire a well-developed and tested system once again,” says Vié.
